Navigating Mass Save

Increasing the energy efficiency of your home is a smart investment but will cost you hundreds up front. Don’t let this scare you off though. If you’re a resident or business owner in Massachusetts, you may qualify for Mass Save’s interest-free loan program. We’ll walk you through the process and you’ll be enjoying lower energy bills before you know it.

Qualifying for HEAT Loan

Before you get a check in the mail and the go-ahead to do any projects, you first need to get a home energy assessment to see if you qualify for the Mass Save program. Below are the following steps to make sure you get all the right paperwork to all the right people.

  1. 1. Check to make sure that your energy expert filled out the first section of the Heat Loan Intake Form that is in your Mass Save folder. If this is not filled out, call your energy expert or HEAT loan customer service.
  2. 2. Find the Steps to Participate sheet in your folder. Here is where you decide what home improvements you would like to make and then you proceed to look at the color-coded corresponding document.
  3. 3. Complete the Heat Loan Intake Form. Also, make sure that you have a signed contractor proposal and any additional required documents.
  4. 4. Submit the HEAT Loan Intake Form, signed contractor proposal for each improvement you plan on making, and any additional required documents. You can either email, fax or mail these documents.

Applying for HEAT Loan

Congratulations on qualifying for the HEAT Loan! You’re almost there. Just follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to paying the lowest energy bills ever:

  1. 1. If all of your paperwork meets the program requirements, you will receive a HEAT Loan Authorization Form.
  2. 2. Look in your Mass Save packet to find a HEAT Loan Participating Bank and Credit Union list. This sheet should tell you about different loan types, recording fees, maximum loan amounts, and preapproval options.
  3. 3. Contact one of the preapproved banks or credit unions.
  4. 4. In the mail you will receive a bank check to pay for the work that needs to be done minus any applicable rebates.
  5. 5. You have 90 days to complete approved improvements once the loan closes.
  6. 6. Pay the contractor once the work has been completed by signing over the bank check. You are responsible for making any upfront payments to the contractor.
  7. 7. Once the energy-efficient improvements have been made, you must contact the HEAT Loan Administrator for inspection.
  8. 8. Check the “How to Apply” form to see the process for any applicable utility rebates. The processing time is typically 4-6 weeks after applying.
